KONTAN.CO.ID – Indonesia’s used car market showed growth in the third quarter of 2025. According to data from the Indonesian Used Car Association (AMBI), used car sales rose by around five percent year-on-year (YoY) by the end of September 2025.
AMBI Secretary Ricky Prawira explained that the performance of the used car industry is highly dependent on new car sales. Used cars generally come from urban residents who sell their old cars to buy new ones. Meanwhile, most buyers come from regional areas.
In major cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya (East Java), used car sales have declined, following the slowdown in new car sales. Data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) shows that national car sales from January to September 2025 fell 11 percent year-on-year, with wholesales recorded at 561,819 units and retail sales at 585,917 units.
Used car sales in Jakarta dropped by around 30 percent. This decline mainly affected Japanese brands that have rarely launched new models. However, conditions outside Jakarta were better, allowing nationwide used car sales to continue growing.
Ricky predicts that used car sales will increase from November to December 2025. This rise follows the launch of new car models and the start of vehicle deliveries to consumers in major cities. When new cars are delivered to buyers in Jakarta, their old vehicles are typically sold and purchased by consumers in regional areas.
The used car market in Jakarta continues to face significant challenges. Some companies even offer warranties of up to five years to attract buyers, even though the cars being sold are generally five to six years old. In addition, consumer interest in Jakarta has begun shifting toward electric vehicles, which are considered more modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly.
On the other hand, demand for used cars in regional areas and other major cities such as Surabaya (East Java) remains strong, particularly for models like the Toyota Avanza, Daihatsu Xenia, Toyota Innova, and low-cost green cars (LCGC). (*)
