GAIKINDO — Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. in Japan unveiled its latest mobility innovations and solutions at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS). The exhibition takes place from 29 October to 9 November 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan. As Japan’s largest automotive exhibition, JMS brings together various global industries. The event also marks an important moment for Daihatsu to strengthen its position as a pioneer of compact and eco-friendly vehicles in the global market.

Daihatsu carries the theme “DAIHATSUMEI for me. Invented for you. Small but capable. Do it all step by step.” Since its founding in 1907, Daihatsu has continued to deliver mobility solutions through compact, high-quality, and affordable vehicles that stay close to people’s daily lives. At JMS 2025, Daihatsu presents a variety of innovative models that inspire visitors to think, “This seems perfect for me,” and “This seems like it would make life more fun.”

A total of eight Daihatsu models are on display. Four of them are concept cars: Midget X, K-OPEN, K-VISION, and KAYOIBAKO-K. The other four include the first-generation Daihatsu Midget as a historic model, the Daihatsu New Move which received a full refresh in June 2025, the Daihatsu K-OPEN Running Prototype, and the e-ATRAI STICKER FACTORY.

Of all the models showcased at JMS 2025, five are world premieres — being displayed for the first time globally. These include the Midget X, K-OPEN, K-VISION, KAYOIBAKO-K, and e-ATRAI STICKER FACTORY. All these models highlight Daihatsu’s technological excellence, efficiency, and creative design — characteristics that define its commitment to creating small vehicles with great value for users.

Midget X is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept model. It continues the innovation of the first-generation Midget, which contributed to improving people’s quality of life. As a vehicle of the future, it offers a new form of mobility with dimensions smaller than current kei cars and greater safety than motorcycles.

The main features of this concept car include a 1+2 seating configuration for three passengers. This layout enhances passenger interaction, allowing families or friends to sit closer together. It also offers a customizable deck option that can be adjusted according to different needs. Another feature is the wide-opening front door, which makes entry and exit easier despite the car’s compact body dimensions.

The K-OPEN concept model delivers a fun open-top driving experience thanks to its compact size. It also offers the responsive performance of a front-engine, rear-wheel drive (FR) layout. This conventionally powered car is designed to provide an enjoyable driving sensation, with its main appeal lying in the combination of COPEN’s signature design character and powerful performance achieved through the front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. In addition, the refreshing comfort of open-air driving and the FR layout enhance driving excitement, adding extra value to the experience.

The K-VISION concept adopts the e-SMART HYBRID system. This same system is used in the Rocky Hybrid and built on Daihatsu’s latest New Global Architecture (DNGA), designed with future electrification in mind. The vehicle offers the appeal of electric performance, powerful yet quiet driving, and 20% better fuel efficiency compared to conventional systems. It also features a spacious interior and sliding doors on both sides for ease of access.

KAYOIBAKO-K is a mini BEV commercial concept whose name means “a reusable box for delivery and distribution.” The term refers to a container designed for repeated use in logistics systems. This model is the smallest kei car in the KAYOIBAKO series, first introduced at Toyota’s booth during JMS 2023. It is connected to a central data hub and equipped with auto-call and auto-parking features, enabling work to be done anytime and anywhere. Besides logistics, KAYOIBAKO-K also supports new community services such as assisting elderly residents in local neighborhoods.

At the event, JMS visitors are also invited to explore the story of the legendary Midget, a symbol of the “DAIHATSUMEI” spirit. It represents Daihatsu’s unique innovation — small in size but delivering a big impact on society. From classic icons to futuristic vehicles, Daihatsu continues to promote efficiency, sustainability, and comfort in mobility. The Midget remains known as a compact, easy-to-drive, and economical “people’s car,” deeply loved in Japan. It represents Daihatsu’s approach to designing products and experiences that stay close to everyday life.

Daihatsu also showcases existing models such as the New Move RS (Dandy Sports), which received a complete refresh in June 2025. This variant appears sporty with additional custom accessories, emphasizing that even small cars can deliver driving joy.

Daihatsu also displays its pre-production model, the K-OPEN Running Prototype. It was developed under the spirit of “make, ride and test it” to bring the COPEN’s driving sensation into the future. This prototype is built with in-house Daihatsu components and refined through multiple testing and development stages. Its key advantages include a lower center of gravity achieved by a tilted engine designed for commercial vehicles and improved handling balance from optimized front-rear weight distribution via the FR layout.

The e-ATRAI model is an electric commercial vehicle combining quiet and powerful BEV performance. It is suitable for urban and last-mile delivery operations. The vehicle can travel up to 200 kilometers, sufficient for daily logistics activities.

Additionally, e-ATRAI features an external power supply function, providing reassurance in emergency situations. With rear-wheel drive and a low center of gravity, it remains stable even when carrying loads. For comfort, the vehicle is equipped with electric sliding doors on both sides, while its interior and exterior highlight high quality with elegant chrome accents. Daihatsu presents the e-ATRAI as an intelligent and enjoyable work vehicle, offering interactive experiences for visitors through on-site customizable sticker printing as souvenirs.

Daihatsu’s participation at JMS 2025 represents the company’s spirit of monozukuri (craftsmanship) and kotozukuri (creating value through experience). Through continuous innovation, Daihatsu remains committed to delivering fun, safe, and sustainable mobility for everyone. The company continues to support the advancement of Japan’s automotive industry and make positive contributions to global society. (*)
