GAIKINDO plays an active role in the motor vehicle industry, both domestically and internationally. Domestically, GAIKINDO acts as a facilitator for its members in responding to government policies concerning the motor vehicle industry, such as industrial policies, trade, energy, taxation, safety standards, new technology and the environment.
GAIKINDO collaborates with the Government (ministries, institutions, and provincial governments), partner associations, academics (universities), researchers, social organizations, and mass media, who have an interest in the development and advancement of the motor vehicle industry. As a strategic partner for the Government, GAIKINDO provides support in the form of various information needed by the Government in determining policies on the motor vehicle industry in the form of comprehensive data as a basis for the Government to prepare, create and implement regulations in order to advance the motor vehicle industry.
GAIKINDO views that global motor vehicle industry and trade activities are currently continuing to grow. This situation makes it important for the global motor vehicle industry to exchange information more frequently and regularly, bringing together their respective interests. With this view, GAIKINDO believes in the need to improve cooperative relations with fellow motor vehicle industry association partners. GAIKINDO has developed several agreements with the global automotive industry to find common ground over differences arising from the policies of each government.
In responding to the development of the global motor vehicle industry, GAIKINDO collaborates with partners in the motor vehicle industry organizations of Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN), Japan, South Korea, and China. In the global arena, GAIKINDO is a member of the International Organization of the Automotive Industry (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d`Automobiles, OICA) which is headquartered in Paris (France) and oversees the global automotive industry. And as a member of OICA since 2006, GAIKINDO was appointed for the first time to organize the General Assembly in Bali in 2017.

GAIKINDO together with the Government actively participates in activities in several international forums, including the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality Automotive Product Working Group (ACCSQ APWG), ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), AEM-METI Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee (AMEICC) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Automotive Dialogue (APEC AD). These steps aim to align domestic motor vehicle industry regulations with international regulations.
GAIKINDO has regularly held motor vehicle exhibitions since 1986, which was first held in Jakarta. GAIKINDO members participated in this exhibition and displayed their latest product vehicles and some of them were concept vehicles. This exhibition aims to promote the development of automotive technology domestically and globally.

Some of the annual automotive exhibition series include the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Since 2015, the GIIAS exhibition has received endorsement from OICA, which makes the exhibition internationally equal to world automotive exhibitions and is included in the OICA event calendar. And in its development, GAIKINDO held the GIIAS The Series exhibition in several major cities in Indonesia.
In addition, for the first time in March 2018 GAIKINDO held the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Commercial Vehicle Expo (GIICOMVEC) exhibition in Jakarta. And in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, GAIKINDO held the GAIKINDO Jakarta Auto Week (JAW) exhibition in Jakarta in March 2022.
In the automotive exhibition series, GAIKINDO also held a conference with themes related to the motor vehicle industry, motor vehicle technology, fuel, regulations and environmental issues. Having a conference at every automotive exhibition is one of the requirements of OICA so that the exhibition is recognized as international class.
GAIKINDO and its members have a concern for the social community sector which is manifested by distributing humanitarian aid to disaster victims, including the Aceh tsunami in December 2004, the earthquake in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) in May 2006, the eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java in 2021, aid in the form of medicine for sufferers and medical equipment for medical personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021.
In addition, GAIKINDO members also provide assistance in the form of scholarships to high-achieving students, internship opportunities for school students and university students and the donation of ambulances to social-community organizations. At every GIIAS motor vehicle exhibition, community activities are also carried out.
These activities include a blood donation program in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), a “Students’ Day” program inviting school and university students to broaden their knowledge about automotive developments, and a donation program for the world of education by providing school supplies for students and helping to repair school buildings.
In the environmental sector, several GAIKINDO members actively collaborate with the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to build and develop green open spaces (city parks), revitalize and conserve flora and fauna habitats in several locations in Indonesia. (*)
