CNBC INDONESIA – Electric vehicle sales in Indonesia increased significantly in September 2025. According to data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), competition among brands in the domestic market is becoming increasingly intense.
Chinese automaker BYD led cumulatively from January 2025 to September 2025 with total sales of 20,077 units. Wuling ranked second with 8,345 units. Denza came in third with 6,775 units. BYD’s overall dominance throughout 2025 shows that the brand is strong in terms of branding and distribution network in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, on a monthly basis, Chery became the best-selling brand in September 2025 with sales of 2,105 units. This achievement made Chery increasingly recognized amid the dominance of Chinese brands in the electric vehicle segment. In the same month, Wuling ranked second with 1,339 units. BYD dropped to third place with sales of 1,088 units.
The growing demand for electric vehicles indicates a shift in the preferences of Indonesian consumers, who are beginning to view electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to conventional engine vehicles. This trend is also driven by rising awareness of energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and various government policies supporting the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.
The competition among Chery, Wuling, and BYD is now becoming fiercer. The biggest challenge no longer comes from conventional brands but from EV manufacturers themselves, who are competing to strengthen their supporting ecosystems. That includes after-sales service, spare parts availability, and competitive pricing strategies.
With continuous growth, Indonesia’s electric vehicle market is expected to become increasingly competitive. The competition is no longer about who leads temporarily but about who can endure and become the consumers’ top choice in the long term. (*)
